She was the youngest person and first golfer to receive Mexico's highest sporting prize. She also bagged the 2003 Nancy Lopez Award, which is presented to the world's most outstanding female amateur golfer.

Ochoa turned professional and joined the LPGA Tour in 2003. She finished her rookie season ninth on the LPGA money list. A year later she won her first two LPGA titles. She claimed the title of golf’s top woman by winning six tournaments in 2007 and topping the money list. There is an LPGA tournament named after her – the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.
